This is my first semester teaching a college class, and being an instructor has showed me more than ever that college is what you make it (disclaimer: I also firmly believe that traditional higher education/college is not the best choice for everyone; education is not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing; and we need more alternatives to traditional education). It truly is a waste and potentially even detrimental to students who either can’t (because it isn’t one-size-fits-all and we all learn differently) or don’t want to make the most out of their experience. I am seeing so many of my students doing nothing, really, but someone — either them or their parents — are paying through the nose for tuition that is not creating any real benefit.
